Woman killed, 303 heads of cattle swept by raging floods

A middle-aged woman died after she was swept away by floods at Maungu area in Voi, Taita Taveta County yesterday.

Confirming the incident, Voi OCPD Joshua Lotukai said the area has been experiencing heavy rains and urged residents to be careful.

The deceased’s body was moved to Voi Hospital mortuary.

Meanwhile, about 303 heads of cattle were swept away on Sunday and crops destroyed following heavy rainfall at Kutos area in Narok County.

This came just two days after more than 700 families in Mulot, Narok County were displaced following heavy rains that pounded the area causing massive landslides and destroying crops in their farms.

The residents, most of who live on escarpments, are now appealing for aid from the government and humanitarian organisations as they fear that if the rains continue to pound the area, they will have no harvest.

According to the residents, most of their farms were swept away by floods, especially their maize farms, leading to fears of food shortage in the near future.

Those living in low-lying areas expressed fear over the danger posed by landslides, which have now become frequent in the area and are calling for assistance in moving to safer grounds.
