Woman hacks mother in-law to death in Limuru

Grief has engulfed Micobo Village in Ndeiya, Limuru Sub County after a middle-aged woman said to be mentally unstable hacked her mother in-law to death using an axe.

The deceased is said to have been preparing porridge in her kitchen when the suspect allegedly hit her on the head four times with an axe.

“We found her body on the floor soaked in blood. She must have died on the spot because we responded to the call immediately,” said a devastated village elder and relative of the deceased, Owen Njoroge, who had received a call from the deceased’s husband.

Caroline Wanjiku, who committed the act, is said to have been married to the deceased woman’s last born son who is in Qatar.

Sources told Citizen Digital that the suspect escaped after the incident but later presented herself to Thigio police post where she confessed her deeds, claiming that demons may have been possessed her before she committed the heinous act.

Area Chief James Mwaura confirmed the incident saying he was informed of the on-goings by a village elder.

The suspect was later transferred to Tigoni Police Station where she is awaiting conviction as the body of the deceased was transferred to Kikuyu Hospital Mortuary.

Mental health issues go largely ignored in Kenyan society as people stigmatise the diseases while other simply attribute them to spiritual beings commonly known as demons or witchcraft.

This has led to conditions such as schizophrenia, that can be controlled, to go undiagnosed to the detriment of the person, the family and society at large.

Meanwhile, A 40-year-old woman was found dead at Shinyalu in Kakamega County on Tuesday as initial police investigations indicate the woman was first raped before being hacked to death.

Confirming the incident, area OCPD Joseph Chebii said a 6-year-old child belonging to the woman was also injured during the attack.

Chebii said that three suspects have been arrested in connection to the incident and will be arraigned in court soon.

Last month, in the same county, an 8-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered by her 21-year-old uncle in Butere and her body found buried in a sugarcane plantation.
