Woman hospitalised after beating by chief

A 50-year-old woman is nursing injuries at the Busia County Referral Hospital after she was allegedly assaulted by the area chief following an argument over a border between their two plots.

Esther Ombajo, who sustained injuries on the head, hands and back, claims to have been brutalised by Chief Charles Oundo of Matayos Township after she told him to remove the fence he had allegedly erected in her plot.

“I told him that I want the fence in my compound removed in three days and he told me that he will not remove it, and we had that argument for a while. He then stood up and went toward his house and took a club, which made me take out my phone to record the incident,” said Ms. Ombajo, a tutor at Ugenya Teachers Training College.

“He hit my hand with the club and my phone fell to the ground. When I tried to pick it up he hit me again on the back of my head, then repeatedly on my hands,” she added.

Ms. Ombajo had been accompanied by a village elder to the the chief’s compound to negotiate over the demacation of their plots before the talks turned into a fight.

However, Busia Deputy County Commissioner Fredrick Ayieko claimed that the woman slapped and insulted the chief, prompting the action taken by the latter, an accusation denied by Ms. Ombajo.

The deputy commissioner said police are investigating the incident.
