Woman in Homa Bay child theft case remanded for 15 days

A 28-year-old woman was on Friday charged with stealing a six-month-old baby at Ndiru village in Homa Bay county.

Rose Atieno Oluoch was charged with stealing Baby Sharon Achieng on May 24, 2019.

“(She)….is charged with taking the baby with an intention of depriving Christine Achieng, the mother, of lawful care of the said child,” the charge sheet reads.

Rose who appeared before Homa Bay principal magistrate Ruth Maloba on Friday pleaded guilty to the offence and was remanded at Homa Bay GK prison for 15 days.

She will be sentenced on June 13, 2019.

She was found with the child on May 30 at her home in Ngegu village and taken to Homa Bay police station.

Investigators on Friday told the court that Rose apparently lured the mother and her child to take tea at a nearby hotel after a sports function at Ndiru Secondary School.

She then lied to Christine that she was going to buy airtime at the nearby shop with the baby but disappeared.

The child has since been reunited with her mother.
