Woman in pain after baby is stolen from hospital

A middle-aged woman is accusing the Moi Referral Hospital in Taita Taveta County of negligence following the alleged theft of her daughter Wednesday, September 28 by an alleged civilian.

The victim, Jane Mueni’s daughter is said to have been stolen by a woman who was admitted to the hospital Tuesday, September 27 evening.

She alleges that the suspect walked into the hospital in civilian clothes holding a polythene bag, which apparently contained patient’s uniform.

She further claims that the woman requested to help her carry the new born before leaving the ward at around 4:00 pm only to return at 8:00 pm ‘heavily pregnant and in labour’.

“She left and came back at around 8:00 pm saying she was in pain. I told her to go to the labour ward because this is not where she is supposed to be when in pain and she left again. At around 11:00 pm, I saw her sleeping next to me,” narrated Ms Mueni.

The woman allegedly went to the washrooms at around 5:00 am and refused to let the other women who wanted to use it in.

“We tried to open the toilet door severally but she kept pushing it back,” one of the patients recalled.

Mueni said that she was going to take a shower at 6:00 am when the woman asked to hold the baby only to disappear before her coming back.

According to some of the women in the ward, some nurses organized for the disappearance of the baby.

“We do not understand how someone can be admitted without a file, this must have been planned by the nurses,” one of the women, who sought anonymity, said.

The hospital staff, when contacted for a comment, declined to speak about the issue saying that the matter was under investigations and an appropriate communication would be made.
