Woman, son in coma after man refused to take them to hospital over religious beliefs

A man from Ramoya village in Kajwang, Ndhiwa has been arrested for allegedly refusing to take his ailing wife and son to hospital over his religious beliefs.

Andrew Anyona Were, a member of Legio Maria church, was arrested on Monday evening.

His wife and son are said to have fallen ill two weeks ago but he kept them at home, insisting that God would heal them there.

The administrator said the suspect’s relatives had tried to persuade him to take his family to hospital but he declined.

Were told them that his religion does not allow any church member to undergo any treatment in hospital.

This despite the two being in critical condition and needing urgent medical attention, according to Area assistant chief Enos Nyawade.

The relatives later reported the matter to assistant chief and on Monday evening, Mr. Nyawade and police officers from Ndhiwa stormed the home.

They forcefully took the man’s wife and son to Ndhiwa Sub County Hospital.

Reports indicate that the two are still in a coma while the suspect has been detained at Ndhiwa Police Station.

He is to be arraigned in court later in the week.
