Woman survives elephant attack

A 58-year old woman is admitted at the Nyahururu District Hospital where she is nursing serious injuries sustained when elephant trampled on her in Rumuruti area of Laikipia County.

The victim, Gennifer Nakouna, was fetching water at Ewaso River when two elephants emerged from the thicket and trampled on her.

The incident happened at about 9:00am on Thursday. Passersby heard her distress calls and they rushed to the scene where they found her writhing in pain.

Nakouna was rushed to the hospital where doctors treated her for serious head, chest and leg injuries. Speaking to the press, doctors said that she is responding well to treatment.

Her elder brother Manyut Nakouna and his sister Magrete Endong’a blamed KWS game wardens from the area saying they were doing nothing to deal with straying elephants.

He added that the government must be responsible for the numerous cases of destruction and wild animal attacks.

Sosian Ward MCA Jacob Endung’ condemned the incident saying KWS officers took too long to respond to calls from the public over the incident.

He added that it was regrettable that cases of human-wildlife conflicts have continued to affect residents in the area.

Should the KWS fail to tame the situation, the MCA said residents would start killing the animals.
