Woman who lost four babies explains naming newborn after Uhuru

A middle-aged woman from Murang’a’s Kenol area has given her reason for naming her newborn after President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Margaret Wairimu Mwangi, who – in the past – lost four pregnancies in a row, likens her struggles to motherhood to Uhuru Kenyatta’s 2013 International Criminal Court (ICC) controversy, which he finally triumphed over – and ended up being Kenya’s fourth Head of State.

Ms Mwangi says she has seen it all. Her disappointed husband left her for another woman because she could not carry a pregnancy to full term – and if she did, the newborn would die shortly after its birth.

When Ms Mwangi finally gave birth successfully at a Murang’a hospital Saturday, her elation and love for Uhuru Kenyatta triggered her to adopt the name, hoping that her son will be great – just like the President.

“I am so happy to be a mother. I am naming him after the President because I passed through challenges to get him, similar to Uhuru’s ICC woes. My doctor had told me I won’t conceive until ten years elapse, but I thank God I have finally given birth,” Margaret Mwangi told Citizen Digital on her hospital bed.

According to Dr Vianny Niyonzima, Ms Mwangi had in the past lost a pregnancy before it could reach full term. She later conceived, thrice, but lost the babies shortly after their birth.

Dr Niyonzima says Ms Mwangi’s uterus is weak and fragile, but he is happy she finally carried a pregnancy to full term.

“She has a history of uterine problems. That explains why she lost her previous pregnancies. But we are glad Baby Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta is doing well,” said Dr Niyonzima.

Ms Mwangi gave birth by cesarean section.
