Woman who sold baby for Ksh.15,000 jailed for 30 years

A Kisii Court has sentenced a woman to 30 years in prison after it found her guilty for trafficking a three-year-old girl.

Kisii Senior Principal Magistrate Nathan Lutta found Doris Kemunto guilty of the offence which took place in May 7, 2013 at Bomorenda, Kisii County.

The court was told that the minor, who was living with her grandmother at the time, had been left in the company of the accused person who is an aunt. When the granny came back, the two were missing.

Kemunto was accused of having fraudulently transferred the baby to Carren Asiago of Kenyenya area in Kisii County.

Asiago, who was charged alongside Kemunto, told the court that she had been sold the baby for Ksh.15,000. She also said that she did was not aware the child had been stolen as Kemunto told her she was the mother.

“This court has proved beyond reasonable doubts that the first accused person in this case is guilty of the offence of child trafficking and has sentenced her to serve 30 years in jail while the second accused person has been acquitted due to lack of evidence linking her to the crime,” said Lutta as he delivered the judgement.

“The first accused person in this case has denied having stolen or selling the baby to the second accused person, however the evidence presented before the court clearly shows that she committed the offences, the court has decided to give her a stiff penalty to serve as a lesson to others.”
