Woman who stole Ksh.1000 weave freed after lawyer offers to pay for it

A  lawyer in Mombasa on Tuesday offered to give Ksh. 2000 to a lady accused of stealing a weave worth half the price.

Caryn Chebet had been arraigned at the Shanzu Law Court for stealing two pieces of hair weave popularly known as ‘Rebecca Indian’ priced at Ksh. 1140.

Appearing before Justice Patrick Odhiambo, the accused pleaded guilty to stealing the weave from Budget Supermarket in Mtwapa town on Sunday

“I stole the weave and hid it under my clothes because I wanted to look better,” Chebet told the court.

She broke down as she revealed that she had no money to spruce herself which is why she decided to shoplift.

Chebet however assured the court that she had learnt her lesson and would not steal again.

Brfore the judge read his ruling, he asked the lawyers if they had anything else to add pertaining to the case.

One lawyer identified as Bosire stood up and said he was willing to give the accused Ksh. 2000 to buy the weave and some food to eat.

The judge ruled in favour of Chebet and ordered that she be released and charges dropped.

The crowd in the courtroom erupted in applause as a relieved Chebet left the courtroom, a free woman and with Ksh. 2000 in hand.
