Womans hands chopped by ex-lover in Nakuru

A 30-year-old woman is nursing serious injuries at Nakuru Level Five Hospital after she was brutally attacked by her estranged lover in Gichungu village, Maai Mahiu, Nakuru County.

Jane Wanjiku is in deep pain, she has several deep cut wounds on her head and left hand. Her right arm was chopped off during the brutal attack that happened last Wednesday.

Wanjiku is also not able to carry out personal duties on her own. She is weak, her body is also shaky, thanks to the attack that has left her traumatized.

“I have a severe headache, and my body is shaking because of the brutal attack that has left me useless,” said Wanjiku unable to hold back her tears.

Narrating the ordeal from her hospital bed, the mother of three said she had gone to collect her casual labour wages in one of her employers home when John Wangai alias Mbugua attacked her at around 8pm.

Wanjiku said the employer requested her to meet him in one of the petrol stations in Maai Mahiu area, but he did not have money with him, therefore they decided to walk to his home to collect the money.

However, while walking to her employer’s home, Wangai is said to have passed them from behind but he did not utter a word.

After about two minutes, he resurfaced from behind and descended on them with a panga.

“My ex- boyfriend passed us and went to hide in a bush and surprisingly while approaching my employer’s home, he came from behind and brutally attacked us,” she recalled.

She said Wangai first attacked the employer and when she screamed for help, he turned against her and begun cutting her with the panga as he vowed to kill her.

“I pleaded with Wangai to forgive me during the attack but he could not hear, but he said his intention was to kill me,” she said.

The attack left both victims unconscious; they were picked by police officers who rushed them to Naivasha hospital.

The employer was later referred to Kenyatta National Hospital since he was in a critical condition while Wanjiku was taken to the Nakuru Level Five hospital.

“I did not know what transpired after the attack, but I found myself in the hospital, and was informed that my employer was taken to KNH,” said the mother, in a feeble voice.

Wanjiku said she was married to Wangai for six months but they separated in August 2014, after he allegedly turned violent.

However,  after parting, she said she had been receiving numerous threats from the suspect who vowed to kill her for failing to raise a family together with him. She reported the matter to Naivasha police station.

“I could not live with Wangai because he used to beat me up, and the best thing was for me to part ways and raise my children as a single parent,” said Wanjiku.

With tears rolling down her face, she regretted that having lost her hand, she could no longer work to raise her three children who are still young.

She asked the police to conduct quick investigations and arrest the suspect for causing her grave harm.

“Why did this man chop off my arm? How would I work to raise my children? The police should look and arraign him in court for justice to take its course,” she said.

The nursing officer in charge of the ward, Priscilla Njuguna said the patient was taken to theatre where a surgical amputation of the wrist was done.

Mrs. Njuguna said the patient was responding well to treatment, adding that medics are observing her right wrist that was also injured during the attack and will conduct tendal repair.
