Women MCAs angered by rising gender violence

Women Members of County Assembly (MCAs) drawn from Laikipia and Kiambu have expressed concerns over the rising cases of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the country.

In a joint communiqué issued on Monday at a Naivasha hotel, the MCAs said it was shocking to see men turn against their wives and attack them.

Kiambu MCA Wanjiku Kibe said that it is shocking to see women being battered each day by their husbands or close relatives and nothing really is being done to protect them.

According to the MCA, the gender violence cases in the country are fast increasing and thus a need for concerted efforts from all government and private sector entities to address the matter.

The MCAs now want the government to make laws dealing with such cases more punitive and set up rescue centres for the victims to receive guidance and counseling services.

“This is a serious issue and we need to look at things in a different way. The incidences are fast increasing and we need to devise new ways of dealing with them,” said Ms Kibe.

On the other hand, Catherine Waruguru, from Laikipia County, said that GBV should be treated as a catastrophe in the country, adding that in most cases, women are the main targets.

“We cannot just sit and shy away from discussing this issue even at policy level, we need stern actions taken against those who commit such heinous atrocities to women,” said Ms Waruguru.

The leaders were reacting to the recent incident highlighted by the media, where 27-year-old Jacqueline Mwende from Machakos County was bettered by her husband who also chopped her hands.
