Women MPs tour KNH amid emerging rape reports

Pressure continues to mount on the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) management to act on rape and assault allegations on new mothers going to nurse their babies at night after women leaders on Saturday toured the hospital on a fact finding mission.

Led by the chair lady of Parliamentary  Committee on Health Sabina Chege, the leaders sought to ascertain the veracity of the claims even as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations commenced investigations.

“The management needs to take responsibility for what has happened. The mothers should be put in one ward near the new born baby unit as opposed to the many wards in this facility. There is no need of a mother being in third floor when her baby is in second floor,” said Ms. Chege

Samburu West MP Naisula Lesuuda also urged the hospital’s management to allow the relevant agencies to conduct investigations into the matter.

“What we would like to tell the management that they should have an open mind so that we can find a solution to the matter,” said Ms. Lesuuda

This comes after a section of victims took to social media, detailing how morgue attendants harass them sexually whenever they meet on the corridors or the lifts en-route to the new born unit situated on the hospital’s second floor.

The posts went viral on Friday prompting Health CS Cleopa Mailu to call for a probe into the matter.

Later, The Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) in a statement, condemned the rape allegations calling for the perpetrators to be brought to book.

“FIDA Kenya calls upon the Government to move with speed and ensure that it guarantees Kenyan women protection and safety at all times in all public hospitals around the Country and to ensure that service delivery is not compromised at any level in and out of the hospital for whatever reason,” the statement read in part.

The federation also demanded that the government beef up security at the hospital and inform the public on the measures it is undertaking to investigate these claims and ensure that the same is not repeated.
