Women Sue Healthcare Providers Over ‘Sterilization’

The five together with two lobby groups are unhappy over the move by the healthcare providers to force them to be sterilized saying it contravenes their rights.

The women are claiming that doctors at the Medicins San Frontieres, Marie Stopes and Pumwani Maternity Hospital forced them to have tubal litigation because of their HIV status.

They now want the court to compel the Ministry of Health to issue a circular to all health facilities stating that forced sterilization of HIV/AIDS positive women is illegal.

They further want the government to come out forcefully and declare its policy on sterilization.

In the petition, the five women said that as a result of the sterilization, their constitutional and reproductive rights have been violated.
