Women who entertained Madaraka Day dignitaries abandoned

Over 400 women who entertained President Uhuru Kenyatta and the audience during the Madaraka Day celebrations in Nyeri County on Thursday, June 1 spent their night in the cold over alleged lack of pay.
The women, some of them quite elderly, spent hours at the venue – Kabiruini Stadium – awaiting payment from the organisers of the function.
Speaking to Citizen Digital in Nyeri town on Thursday, the women alleged that they had been practicing for the day for the past six days and had been Promised Ksh 6,000 each as compensation after the celebrations on Thursday.
They pointed an accusing finger at the County Government of Nyeri saying it has failed to honour its promise adding that Governor Samuel Wamathai promised them that he would get them the money only for them to receive Ksh 500, which they declined.
The women further claimed that one of them collapsed due to hunger as they had not eaten since 5:00 am.
They have threatened to disrupt Governor Wamathai’s submission of nomination papers to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) until their dues are paid in full.
The ladies also threatened that the amount will attract an interest of Ksh 1,000 per day saying that they abandoned their duties only to be ignored and avoided by the organisers.
They are further calling on women in other counties to trend with caution when it comes to offering entertainment services in government functions.
