Yatani, Tobiko rave over cabinet nomination

Former Marsabit governor Ukur Yatani and former Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko have thanked President Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto for including them in their new cabinet.

Speaking to Citizen Digital on Friday Mr. Yatani said he was elated by the development saying that he only learnt of his nomination through the press.

“I want to thank everyone who stood with me and who supported our party. It’s a great honour to be called upon to serve in the cabinet by the president,” said the cabinet nominee.

Tobiko  also thanked the president for his nomination.

“I was on a on a week holiday. I was summoned to State House yesterday but I was not able to make it. I thought long and hard about the nomination and later accepted the offer. I have to admit that I have never envisaged myself as a cabinet secretary,” said Tobiko.

Council of Governors (COG) chairperson Josphat Nanok lauded the nomination of former Nakuru and Marsabit governors Kinuthia Mbugua and Mr.Yatani saying it is “an indication of the presidency’s goodwill for devolution”.

“Having served as pioneer Governors and senator (former Turkana Senator John Munyes who has also been nominated to the Cabinet), the leaders are champions of devolution and their appointment will deepen relationship between National and County Governments,” said Nanok.

Kajiado governor Joseph Ole Lenku welcomed Mr. Tobiko’s nomination saying that the president’s changes in the cabinet reflect the regional and ethnic diversity of Kenya.

“As residents of Kajiado we are very happy to see one of our own, Keriako Tobiko. I have worked with the cabinet secretaries who were retained and a number of state officers who were either appointed or nominated and I can assure Kenyans they have the will and experience to steer the country into the right direction,” said governor Lenku.

Mr. Yattani’s nomination comes after President Kenyatta on August 26 during a vote hunt tour of the region promised Marsabit residents that the loser of the bitterly contested gubernatorial race between Jubilee candidate Mohamud Mohammed and Frontier Alliance Party’s Yatani would get a government appointment.

Elsewhere Kieni MP Kanini Kega also said that the president appointed the team on a merit basis and dismissed speculation that the President and his deputy are ‘tussling’ over government jobs because of  Ruto’s conspicuous absence during  the president’s address to the nation while unveiling his partial new cabinet yesterday.

This comes after the president  Kenyatta nominated Tobiko, Yatani and Munyes to serve in his new cabinet as he strives to build a solid legacy in his second and last term.
