You have betrayed us! Rutos Coast allies told

A section of Kwale County MCAs have come out to condemn legislators from the Coast region who have expressed their support for Deputy President William Ruto’s 2022 stab at the presidency.

The MCAs termed the move by the MPs to pledge support for DP Ruto as betrayal to the electorates whom, according to them, have not been consulted.

The MPs Benjamin Tayari (Kinango), Suleiman Dori (Msambweni) and Kassim Tandaza (Matuga) as well as Kwale County Senator Issa Juma Boy are among Opposition leaders who have declared their support for the DP.

Kwale County Assembly Speaker Sammy Ruwa said the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has not issued a directive to members on who to support for the 2022 elections.

“I am a member of the ODM party, and I have not received any direction from my party to support one candidate or the other for the presidency,” he said.

“We have not even agreed as a party whether we will have a presidential candidate or not. So I think it would be too early to start running around one direction or another.”

According to Kasemeni MCA Antony Yama, the topic of who to support for the 2022 presidency would remain a non-issue in Kwale until all the Coast region leaders have a sit-down with the residents.

“There has not been any meeting between us, leaders, and the people on who to support for the presidency.

“Those saying they have already to support the Deputy President…whom did they come to that decision with?

“This habit of lumping people into one basket for one’s own personal gain has to stop,” said the Jubilee leader.

Samburu/Chengoni MCA Chirema Kombo, on the other hand, said there was need to have a meeting for all Coast region leaders with the electorates to chart their political destiny.

Kombo said: “We must speak in one voice as Coastal region leaders…so that even if we decide to support the Deputy President, let it be a decision that was discussed and agreed on.”

Among other leaders who lashed out at DP Ruto’s newly-found allies in the Coast were Nominated MCAs Fatuma Masito and Suleiman Nzala.

The Raila Odinga-led ODM only last week warned that the party will take disciplinary action against members who have openly declared their support for Deputy President William Ruto’s 2022 presidential bid.

In a statement to newsrooms, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna accused the said leaders of defiance.

“The Party through its appropriate organs will now consider disciplinary action against these members should they persist in their contempt of Party resolutions and directions from the Party Leader,” he said.
