A section of Murang’a Kikuyu Council of Elders has strongly opposed the installation of Murang’a Women Representative Sabina Wanjiru as their leader.

The splinter group from the Kikuyu council of elders, Murang’a branch, which had gathered in Murang’a town, opposed the installation Wanjiru as women elder terming the move against Kikuyu customs where women are not installed as elders.

Led by the Secretary General Simon Ng’ethe, the group strongly cautioned Ms Wanjiru not to proceed with the said ceremony to avoid a curse and also warned Father Joachim Gitonga not to accept the post of chairmanship and dissociate himself with the ceremony.

Ng’ethe added that Kikuyu leadership was entrusted to Mr Stanley Kinyanjui who was transparently elected by groups known as Miakithus as opposed to Father Gitonga whom they said was imposed to the seat by National chairman Kikuyu council of elders Wachira Kiago.

But in a quick rejoinder, Father Gitonga said that he was the legitimate chairperson of the Kikuyu council of elders adding that the event is not an installation but an official launch of the Kikuyu council of elders, Murang’a branch.

Father Gitonga added that claims of installing Sabina as an elder was not factual but  were only recognizing Wanjiru as an elected women leader  by virtue of her  being elected as the county Women Representative and  elevation to a leader but not an elder.

He said that the other faction is named as Murang’a council of elders which was distinctively different from the Kikuyu council of elders urged them to steer away from the activities and agenda of the association.

Wrangles between factions in the Kikuyu council of elders has dominated as each splinter group tries to exert power and strength over the other as to who represents the people of the Agikuyu.
