Youth leader provides free medical care in exchange for voter registration in Nyeri

As ongoing Mass Voter Registration countrywide enters its third week, a youth leader in Mathira Constituency has decided to capitalise on the national health crisis in order to push residents to register as voters.

George Warutere Thinwa has come up with an initiative for providing free medical services to entice area residents to register as new voters.

Residents of Kahuru in Iria-ini ward now get an opportunity to see doctors before being registered as voters at the same place where IEBC officials are conducting the registration exercise.

“We are treating all manner of diseases [and] giving people free drugs. After that, we also have the good people of IEBC who are helping us to ensure that nobody leaves here without having confirmed their registration, and if they are not registered, they register,” said Mr Thinwa.

This has come as a relief for the residents who have been gravely affected by the ongoing doctors’ strike that has paralysed health system in the country.

Paul Wachira, a resident, thanked the planners of the program saying he has been tested for different diseases by the doctors in the medical camp and confirmed his registration status as a voter.

Anastasia Muthoni Maina, another resident, also expressed her gratitude for the programme saying she was treated and given drugs after she registered as a voter.

So far the initiative has been able to register over 3000 people with its target being 100,000, which is the maximum number that can be registered using the BVR kit.

Still in Nyeri, Senator Mutahi Kagwe has lamented over the low voter turnout in the county.

According to the senator, the low turnout can be attributed to voters registering as voters in other counties including Nairobi and Isiolo.

Senator Kagwe claimed that some politicians are behind the massive transfer of voters from Nyeri County for purposes of benefiting during the nomination process and warned residents of the repercussions of transferring voters to other counties on the presidential race outcome in the forthcoming August 8 General Election.
