Three foreign diplomats who were involved in a road accident on Tuesday at Lukenya area on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway were on Wednesday airlifted to Nairobi for further treatment.

The three; Zambia Ambassador to Kenya Brenda Mudenda, Botswana Ambassador to Kenya Duke Lephoko and another diplomat from Zambia, Kama Wasa, were injured after one of their vehicles collided with a trailer.

They were rushed to the Machakos Level V hospital before they were transferred to Nairobi in a military chopper.

Police reported that the accident happened after the trailer collided head-on with the car carrying the Zambian diplomats before losing control and ramming into the vehicle with ambassador Lephoko.

One of the drivers, Joseph Ndungu, who was also injured in the accident is expected to be transferred to Avenue Hospital in Nairobi by road.

Machakos Governor Dr. Alfred Mutua, who visited the envoys at the Machakos hospital on Tuesday night said he will ensure that the Mombasa dual carriageway that is under construction is opened by next week to curb further accidents and deaths.
