Zambian community assimilated into Kikuyu culture

For more than 50 years now residents of Kiambaa Village in Kiambu County have played host to a community of Zambians.

A Citizen Digital reporter hiked the depths of the village in search for this community that has embraced some of the local traditions and managed to seek a means to earning a solid living.

One of the locals narrated the story of how their parents departed from their motherland in Zambia to Kiambu County in a  church mission dubbed “Missionaries on a Quest to Spread the Gospel”.

This move took place when Kenya was at the peak of its struggle to obtain her independence in the 1960s.

“Our parents landed as a group of more than 100 people, but as time passed by, one by one they slowly perished, leaving only the subsequent generations. At this point, only three are alive,” said one of them.

He further narrated that some of their comrades embarked on the journey as single people hile other brought along their families.

Within a few years, the community had intermarried with the locals and conformed tot heir way of life.

Being given a permanent place to live in Kiambu County means that they have been assimilated into the native Kikuyu community.

In order to keep their Zambian culture alive, the community holds an intimate gathering every Saturday from 2pm to 5pm to worship God in their own unique way.
