16 to represent Kenya in World deaf tennis championships

Kenya is set to contest in Deaf Tennis competition for the first time in history, in Turkey this October. The Kenyan team will comprise of 16 players, eight men and eight women.

Team Kenya coach Veronica Asogo believes that her players will give their best in the competition despite the fact that it is the first time Kenya is involving herself in such a competition.

“We are now finalizing on our trial matches in order to get the best team to represent Kenya in the competition. So far, we have a team from Mombasa and another from Nairobi. I am still checking on individual performances in order to get a strong team. I have already seen potential in the players and I expect them to give their best.”

The players to represent Kenya will be selected through tallying of games they’ve won. Wanjiru Michelle will face off Muthoni Purity in the first women semi-final while Ester Kanini will battle Joyce Niva in the second women semi-final.

“I will also try to check players who have a good level of skills even though they didn’t do well because by the end of the day it is not all about winning sometimes it’s about the commitment and the skill of the player so I will try and balance the team, ” added Asogo.

Asogo is hopeful the government will chip in to fund them to avoid a last-minute rush citing that the deaf federation of Kenya had approached the government to source finances for their travel.

According to the event organizers, the game aims at involving the physically handicapped people to showcase their talent and efforts of doing things and create an atmosphere where the disabled can earn a living through sports.

In the meantime, the chairman of the National Council for persons with disability, Peter Muchiri cited that it is a good move to involve persons with disability in such games and urged Kenyans at large to join hands in enabling the disabled.

“Such initiatives will greatly help in doing away with the mindset that the physically disabled always need help and show people that they can also do things by themselves and I believe that the team which will head to Turkey will get good results.”

Muchiri added that the government should aim at involving the disabled in various activities to ensure that they are part of nation building.
