20 Kenyan boxing coaches benefit from Aiba training

Some 20 boxing coaches from across the country are set to benefit from Aiba Star 1 coaching certification which began Wednesday at a Nairobi hotel.

The training has been organised by the Boxing Federation of Kenya(BFK) in an effort to build capacity of coaches as a recognition of the critical role they’ll be expected to play in implementing the federation’s Ndondi Mashinani program.

The Federation expects the coaches to learn new coaching ideas which they will put to use when they go back to their respective clubs across the country, helping them to tap top talent by giving the youngsters the best foundation in their boxing journey.

Concerns have been raised regarding the boxing situation in the country as Kenya has continued to lose its prestige as one time boxing powerhouse, with only one referee and judge currently certified by Aiba.

The federation has since embarked on importing a scoring system and once the machine is in the country, the referees  and judges will be able to have their  Aiba Stars 1 certification courses locally.

Initially the referees and judges course was to start in mid-November 2020 but since Kenya did not have a Swiss Scoring System(SSS), Aiba officials advised otherwise as the training could not proceed without the critical equipment.

Meanwhile, the coaches training has also been supported by the international federation Aiba through the interim president Dr. Mohamed Moustahsane by assigning two of their most experienced instructors Mr. Terry Edwards from England and Mr. Ervin Kade from Finland, to conduct the course.
