94 take part in Chairmans prize Golf in Mombasa

Hosts Mombasa Golf Club players dominated the chairman’s prize golf tournament taking the first five positions.

The tournament organized to celebrate the first woman chair person for the club attracted 94 participants from around the country – Mombasa’s Nyali Golf Club, Royal Nairobi Golf Club, Kiambu and Muthaiga golf clubs sending the bulk of the guest players.

“This is the first time we have a lady elected as the chair person, and I have been successful in completing most projects that I found stalled. This is because of the support I have received from our members, who are some of the best,” Jane Githere told Citizen Digital.

Mombasa Golf Club is the first in sub Saharan Africa found along a coastline hence attracting the huge number of players. She however hopes to gain more success before the end of her term.

“We have good co-operation with clubs that reciprocate, and we have learned a lot on how to make this place one of the best,” she added. “My aim is to make sure that more youths are introduced to this great sport not necessarily from the rich families… this week I organized a tournament for our caddies, we want them also to enjoy what they are doing.”

Playing along the coastline is one of the most difficult experiences due to heavy winds from the sea, but Paul Kinyanjui held on to be the overall winner at home tough with 37 points only one ahead of Men category winner Eric Nyongesa.

Mary Mariga emerged the best lady winner with 29 points, one ahead of Cherly Bush while Abass Sheikh was the best guest man winner as Mary Kandu won the ladies category.

Best Junior went to Andrew Wahome with 33 points while Paul Macharia emerged the best senior.
