A lot has to be done, says Lungaho as Malkia queens jet back

The national women’s volleyball team technical director, David Lung’aho, believes there is a lot to be done for Malkia Strikers to defend the All African Games title in Morocco and reclaim the African Championship set for Egypt in July.

Malkia Strikers, the four-time All African Games champions clinched the single Zone Five All African Games ticket on Monday after thrashing Uganda in the round-robin qualifiers final fixture at the Lugogo Indoor Arena in Uganda, but Lung’aho was quick to point out that poor reception still hurts the Kenyan queens.

Lunga’ho said the team will hit the camp next week to fine tune their skills ahead of the African Championship set for Egypt from July 5-15, All African Games in Morocco and Olympic Qualifiers penciled for Italy in August 2-4.

“It was a good outing for team and now focus shift to African Championship in Egypt .We have a lot to do especially in reception and we start working on that in earnest,” he said.

The team jetted back from Uganda on Tuesday afternoon and Lunga’ho is brimming with confidence they will reclaim the African Championship title in Egypt and go all the way to defend the All African Games gong in Morocco.

“Before defending our African Games title in August we want first to win our 10th African Championship title in Egypt in July,” he averred.

In the 2017 edition held in Cameroon, Malkia Strikers lost to the hosts by 3-1 in Younde.

At the same time, Kenya will face World Championships runners up Italy then Netherlands and Belgium in the Olympic Games qualifiers, which will be played in Italy from August 2-4.

Malkia Strikers will be eyeing to get back to Olympics Games set for Tokyo, Japan next year after a 15-year drought. The team last played in the Olympics in 2004 finishing at 11th position, similar to the previous and first outing in 2000.
