Abandoned Roll ball team in KSh450,000 bricks debt

A crippling financial crisis forced Team Kenya for the African Roll Ball Championships into debt as they resorted to borrowing KSh450,000 to facilitate their trip to Kampala where they are set to defend their titles.

The Kenyan ladies are the reigning world champions with the men’s team ranking fourth but risked missing the tournament that will also serve as the world championship qualifiers had it not been the intervention of local church Glory Outreach Assembly (GOA).

According to Bishop David Thagana who is also the patron for both teams, the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Arts failed to honour its promise to meet the team’s travel and accommodation expenses pushing him to seek the helping hand of GOA.

“The amount was set aside for the construction of new offices at our headquarters, and now we need Kenyans who love sports to help us purchase the 4,500 bricks needed, to refund the cash,” Thagana told Citizen Digital.

The team of 12 ladies and 12 men departed for Uganda on Thursday with a quest to defend both titles with the women’s team facing Uganda in their opener. The men’s team clash with North African side Egypt in their first encounter.

“We are very ready for the tournament I believe we are going to make an impact and every one will see how important this tournament is for our teams,” Team Manger Mussa Kaguli stated.

Roll ball stake holders are now organizing a major fundraiser when the team returns to help them raise funds to refund the money they owe the church.

“We need 4,500 bricks and one is selling for 100 shillings, which is enough to cater for the world champions, while in Uganda,” Thagana said.
