AFC Leopards players in STI claims planning legal action

Kenyan Premier League side, AFC Leopards players adversely mentioned in reports they have contracted Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are planning to take legal action against the person who sparked the allegations on social media, a club official has said.

Speaking to Citizen Digital after Wednesday’s training, Team Manager, Joseph Milimu, denied any member of their squad members had contracted such diseases charging that if the reports were accurates, they would not be training or playing.

“All the players are tested by the club doctor before and there is no way they would be allowed to go on to the pitch with such illnesses. The three players mentioned are seeking legal advice to sue the one who made those reports public since they are known to them,” Milimu declared.

“It’s true we are not performing well on the pitch but such reports are demoralising to the players especially since the person behind them cannot prove whether they obtained results of the tests that showed they were treated for such diseases.

“There are many things being said about the team and we are trying to find solutions to our problems but saying players are sick is not the way to beat us. None of our players is sick,” the official emphasised.

Social media was ignited on Tuesday evening when a post on micro-blogging site, Twitter, said four players had contracted STIs and the club had urged its female fans to keep away from the playing unit. The tweet was widely shared even on other platforms before various websites and blogs picked up on the story.

Last week, club chairman, Dan Mule, blamed alcoholism and excessive partying as the main reason the 12-time national champions are flirting with relegation from the KPL in 12th place instead of challenging for the title despite massive investment in the team.

Since then, a number of club legends have been visiting the squad to speak to the players in a bid to relay the importance of donning the Leopards jersey that is revered across Africa.

Ex-Ingwe stars; Maurice Sunguti, Reginald Asibwa and Tony Lidonde visited the team during Wednesday’s training session in the continuing mentorship programme.

Further reports indicate the club’s branch chairmen met last weekend to discuss issues affecting the playing unit where the STI allegations featured with the leaders prevailed to dissuade female supporters famously known as ‘Ingwelets’ from ensnaring the boys.

It followed leaked posts from a cross-platform messaging application, WhatsApp group belonging to the players featured images of the girls said to be oiling their loins in a season they have massively underachieved.

Leopards play Western Stima in a KPL clash at Nairobi’s Nyayo National Players on Saturday keen to avenge their 3-0 drubbing by the Kisumu based side that bundled them out of the GoTv Shield Cup.
