Afrobasket: Kenya edge out Mozambique to keep championship dream alive

Kenya men’s basketball team Morans overcame the second hurdle in the long-qualification journey to the 2021 Afrobasket Championship after they turned on the style to beat Mozambique 79-62 in their final Group B game at the Kigali Arena on Friday evening.

The victory saw Morans book a ticket to the second leg of qualifiers set for February next year to know their fate.

Prior to the Friday win Kenya had recorded two defeats on the bounce against Senegal and Angola.

Only the top three teams from the qualification journey after the second leg will qualify for the Afrobasket Championship that will be held in Kigali, Rwanda next year.

And at the Kigali Arena,  Morans recorded 19-19 draw in the first quarter before losing 14-17  in the second quarter going to halftime trailing 33-36.

After the break, Morans came out more energized as they won the third quarter 23-12 before dominating in the final bend to win 23-14.

Denmark based Tylor Ongwae showed his master class scoring freely to help the Morans, netting in 26 baskets.

The presence of captain Griffins Ligare also added more weight to the team after missing the first two matches.
