Aga Khan, Tiwi Girls scoop Coast basketball titles

History was re-written as the Coast Region Secondary Schools Term One games concluded on Saturday with Mombasa County regaining the boys’ basketball title when Aga Khan Academy (Akam) beat the mighty St. Georges 39-32.

Akam started on well by taking the first quarter 13-8, but lost the second one 6-5. They came with a new strategy in the third and won 8-1 thanks to the prowess of Victor Naisori who scored 12points.

In the last quarter, the donkey work was executed by Tajikistani, Alisher Abdumamadov who got seven.

St. George’s top scorers were Abiar Chol and Gabriel Deng with 12 and four points.

Murray Girls were not aided by their home support in Mwatate, going down 94 – 13 to the new queens of coast basketball Kaya Tiwi from Kwale County.

Through the guidance of coach Philip Onyango , Kaya Tiwi had Winnie Akinyi scoring 36 followed by Beryl Aoko who had 20.

-Shimba Hills reign ends-

Kaya Tiwi also brought to an end Shimba Hills six-year reign at the Kwale County games, knocking the defending champions from the regional competition.

Most of their top basketball players from Shimba, an institution that has sent many players to scholarships abroad transferred to other schools, leaving a skeleton team behind as the dynasty collapsed.

Shimba also relinquished the boys’ hockey and rugby titles in a sign the tide has changed in the region.

In rugby 15s, St. Georges retained their title for the fourth year running by beating hosts Kenyatta High School 12 – 3.

Said Mwanjalo from Tononoka High (Mombasa) won the decathlon title by 4789 points but Kilifi County took the overrall crown by accumulating 17598points.

 

Emily Mkando won the girls’ heptathlon by scoring 3035 points but Taita Taveta County scooped the team title with 11324 points.

Kilifi County retained the regional games title by getting 73 points, followed by Taita Taveta, Mombasa and Kwale with 60, 53 and 52 points.

On Friday, St. John’s Girls and St. Charles Lwanga won girls and boys hockey titles.

In the Highlands Region the usual teams retained their crowns as action came to an end on Saturday adds Kenerickson Njeru.

Kangaru High School of Embu held on to their rugby15s crown by out classing Kiriani from Tharaka-Nithi 16-0.

Kirigara defeated Don Bosco from Embu 54-22 to book their ticket to the nationals for a record sixth time in a row.

Gategi Girls’ from Embu will be representing the region for the fourth year in a row after they defeated Moi Girls Marsabit 1- 0 in hockey girls final.

In basketball boys, Kangaru are the new champions after demolishing Kitui 74 -58,  with defending champions Kathungi never making it to the regional games.

Meru School who were the hosts did not come out empty handed after they were crowned hockey boys champions by blanking Chogoria Boys from Tharaka-Nithi 2-0.

National games will be held at Friends School Kamusinga in Nzoia County from April 12.
