Agero: Why Im excited to be in Shujaas Rugby World Cup squad

Shujaa fly-half Eden Agero believes consistency and hard work prompted head coach Innocent Simiyu to select him as one of the youngest players in the Rugby World Cup squad that is preparing to take on Tonga from 11.01pm on Friday at the AT&T Park in San Francisco, USA.

At 27, the Kenya Harlequins player was selected alongside veteran Collins Injera who has featured in three World cups, Andrew Amonde and Willy Ambaka who both have played twice in the tourney.

“I’m a young guy who grew up learning how to play rugby from the national team. In our generation, the current head coach Innocent Simiyu was still playing together with Humphrey Khayange while Collins Injera and Andrew Amonde were newcomers in the team,” Agero reminisced on his old days.

He added that watching the stars he idiolised play gave him the drive and motivation of playing at the international level.

Agero was first selected for the Rugby World Cup in 2013 in Moscow, Russia by the then head coach Mike Friday where Shujaa finished fourth, although he never played in the tourney.

“For the first time one feels intimidated playing against stronger opponents but when you realize that you have prepared well enough you discover you are just a player like them and then you play your game.”

The Kenya Harlequins player has been in and out of the team struggling with injuries for quite some time but has of late been enjoying the game with consistent performances.

Agero also believes the support of the fans and sponsors will help them rise to a higher level in future.

Kenya’s top try scorer with 272 tries in the HSBC World rugby series Collins Injera mentioned Agero as a player maker, good kicker, and a player who pulls strings from the midfield and organize the ranks, and will be relied upon to help Shujaa attain their World Cup dream.
