Ailing Matano boosted, KPL coaches set for medical cover

Coaches in the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) are set to be covered under a medical scheme from next season as the fraternity gathered on Tuesday to raise funds for ailing Ulinzi Stars FC boss, Robert Matano.

At an event where Ksh50,000 from Fidelity Insurance that partners with the league was presented to the family of Matano in Nairobi, Kenya Football Coaches Association (Kefoca) chairman, Ricky Solomon, also announced other members of the technical bench would also benefit from the plan.

“We’re going through a hard time as a fraternity. We only recently lost former Gor Mahia Coach, James Siang’a and we’re in the process of raising funds for his burial.

“We’re planning more events like these for our brother (Matano) as we prepare for a major fundraiser that will be held on October 5 in Nairobi,” Solomon said after a match pitting the coaches and former players held at Nairobi’s Ligi Ndogo Grounds.

Event host, Chris Amimo, who is the Team Manager of National Super League side, Ligi Ndogo, urged coaches and retired players to get medical cover like professionals in other disciplines.

Matano’s wife and daughter, who were both present at the event, said that Ksh10,800 was required to fund each dialysis session for the former Sofapaka FC and Tusker FC Head Coach while Ksh5m was needed to fund for further treatment in India.

Benjamin Nyangweso, his deputy has been in charge of the soldiers in an interim basis after Matano’s condition worsened with a mobile phone paybill number launched to assist his cause.
