Ajax maintain unbeaten run in Dutch league

Ajax maintained their unbeaten run in the Dutch League with a 2-0 victory away to Excelsior on Sunday.

20-year-old Anwar El Ghazi continued hiAjax maintains unbeaten run s prolific form in front of goal, latching on to a headed ball forward from Arkadiusz Milik before firing home his seventh goal in six games after 33 minutes.

Polish international Milik turned provider to finisher shortly before half time, slotting a sublime strike past Filip Kurto from the edge of the penalty area.

After the interval chances were scarce, but that proved enough to see the 33-time Dutch champions keep their one-point lead over Heracles at the head of the table.

In the other match played over the weekend, Heracles Almelo beat PSV Eindhoven 2-1 at home.

PSV opened the scoring in the second minute when Belgian forward Maxime Lestienne’s free kick was headed in by fellow forward Luuk de Jong.

Eight minutes later Heracles came close to equalising through a free kick, but Oussama Tannane ‘s kick bounced off PSV goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet and Wout Weghorst’s shot from the rebound hit the post.

Heracles eventually got the equaliser in the 39th minute through midfielder Mark-Jan Fledderus and six minutes later Moroccan Iliass bel Hassani set up fellow midfielder Thomas Bruns to put the home side ahead 2-1.

In the second half Tannane chased a long ball from keeper Bram Castro, but ran straight into PSV’s Mexican defender Hector Moreno, injuring himself and having to be helped off the field.

Moreno appeared to suffer no ill effects, except that he rose for a cross in the 81st minute and headed the ball straight at Castro.

Soon afterwards Castro kicked long and German substitute defender Robin Gosens controlled and shot well, but Zoet blocked the attempt.

Heracles stands second in the league with 15 points from six games, while Ajax tops the log with 16 points. PEC Zwolle and Feyenoord are third and fourth with 14 and 13 points respectively.

PSV and Roda JC Kerkrade are ranked fifth and sixth respectively both tied on 11 points
