AK boss Tuwei throws weight behind incoming Sport CS

Athletics Kenya president Lt. Gen (Rtd) Jackson Tuwei has become the latest sports stakeholder to show support for the recently nominated Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Achesa.

Achesa was nominated to head the revamped Ministry of Sports and Heritage earlier known as Ministry of Sports and Culture, replacing Dr. Hassan Wario who is poised to be Kenya’s ambassador to Austria.

In an interview with Citizen Digital, the AK boss said that they welcome the new CS to the sporting world and the athletics field which has placed Kenya on the world map.

“We in athletics welcome him.We are ready to work together for the benefit of our athletes and thus we will be willing to assist him in any way possible,” said Tuwei.

Tuwei, however, notes that there are daunting tasks that await the CS nominee upon successful vetting by the National Assembly and subsequent assumption of office.

“Upon his assumption of office, we would like him to specifically consider the welfare of the athletes because there are some who are yet to be paid for a long time,” lamented Tuwei.

Tuwei has also called for a deep look into the wanting sports facilities in the country.

“In terms of the Sports Act, there are some things we are not comfortable with and I think it is also important for that to be considered, as well as the facilities in each county,” charged Tuwei.

Athletics which is the most successful sport in Kenya suffered a major setback during Wario’s reign with several scandals, chief among them, the infamous 2016 Rio debacle, topping the list.

Achesa, if confirmed as the new sports CS by parliament,  will have his in-tray full as team Kenya gears for the Commonwealth Games slated for  April 4-15 in Gold coast, Australia.
