AK postpones World Relays Championships trials

Athletics Kenya (AK) has postponed the trials for the World Relays Championships that was slated for Saturday at the Nyayo National Stadium.

The one-day event was set to be used in selecting a team to represent Kenya at the World Relays Championships scheduled for May 1-2 in Silesia, Poland.

In a statement, AK said the event will now be held on a new date to be communicated while at the same time urging athletes to continue with training in readiness for the rescheduled event.

The postponement comes as a precautionary measure in the wake of surging cases of Covid-19 as the country grapples with the third wave of the virus. Some 1,127 people tested positive for the virus on Tuesday raising the total confirmed cases to 123,167 while the total number of fatalities stands at 2,048.

Already the federation had sent an invitation to some countries in the region seeking their participation at the day-long event in a bid to get the best out of Kenya’s sprinters.

It is only 38 days to the start of the biannual championships in Poland where Kenya will be seeking to improve her medals tally from a dismal show at the 2019 championships in Japan. Kenya bagged only a bronze medal in the mixed relay race.

In the build up to the trials, sprinters have already faced off in three legs of weekend meetings set up by the federation.
