Thus, the first and second meets of AK Cross Country series that were slated for October and 16 and 23, in Machakos and Iten are suspended.

While announcing the move on Thursday afternoon at the AK headquarters, Nairobi, president Jackson Tuwei said the federation is still in shock following back-to-back deaths of Tirop and former Africa Junior silver medalist Hosea Macharinyang who is alleged to have committed suicide and was laid to rest on Thursday.

“Athletics Kenya executive committee is planning to visit Tirop’s family on Friday to pay our condolences. Furthermore, we have decided to cancel all local events for the next two weeks that include cross country meetings in Machakos and Iten,” said Tuwei.

At the same time, Tuwei urged Kenyan athletes to open up as he noted that mental health is of late the greatest challenge facing local athletes.

“Mental health seems to be the biggest challenge currently affecting our athletes. On the same breadth we thank our Cabinet Secretary for Sports for setting up a task force to address the issues of gender and mental health whom we will be engaging to help our athletes. In the meantime we ask all our athletes, and coaches to remain calm as investigations to unravel the current cases continue,” said Tuwei.

He added “We also call upon our athletes to speak out and seek help where necessary so that these issues can be addressed either individually or collectively.”

Tirop’s lifeless body with stab wounds on the neck was found at her house in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County on Wednesday with the husband the prime suspect of the heinous act, according to police.

As the hunt for the suspect continues, Tuwei condemned the incident while urging for a speedy investigation into the matter.

“We are confident the relevant agencies are working round the clock to ensure speedy justice to the family and friends who have been left emotionally scarred by the demise of someone they depended on for financial and psychological support,” said Tuwei.
