AK to pick 65 athletes for All Africa Games

Athletics Kenya will select at least 65 athletes to represent the country in the track and field events at the 12th edition of the All Africa Games that will be held from August 23 to September 3 in Casablanca, Morocco.

The three-day event will be held at the Nyayo National Stadium, Nairobi from June 20-22, where selected athletes will compete for a chance to represent the country.

“We are currently working on a list of athletes who have qualified to take part in the trials. The event is for us to make sure the best will represent the country,”Paul Mutwi, AK, vice president told Citizen Digital.

Meanwhile, AK is optimistic Kenya’s elite athletes will be available for the All African Games. AK hopes to use the event as a platform to mark the qualifying time and standards for the World Championship in Athletics later in September at Doha, Qatar.

“Even if an athlete’s finishes number one in the trials he or she must have been tested three or more times before qualifying for the World Championship,” added Mutwii

“This is even tougher for them. They have to meet the conditions and that is why we expect them to take part,” he concluded.

The 2019 World Championships in Athletics will begin on 28 September 28 and ends October 6 in Doha Qatar.

Kenya has already selected marathon squad for the event with the track and field trials expected in the coming weeks.
