Akida urges Starlets teammates to embrace social media

Harambee Starlets striker Esse Mbeyu Akida has urged his fellow female players to embrace social media as a tool for personal branding, crediting her online presence for helping her secure the move to Besiktas JK.

Akida signed a two-year deal with Turkish side in February this year after her contract with former F.C Hamat HaSharon in Israel elapsed at the close of 2019.

“I remember when I was playing for my home clubs like Spedag and Thika Queens I never used to bother much about my social media because I found it very demanding of my time but I’ve realised its importance.

“When my stint in Israel ended I had to stay at home in Kilifi before making another move. Our maiden African Women Cup of Nations tournament in 2016 was a big break for us because we made contact with potential agents.

“A Ghanaian agent was the one who linked me to Besiktas after I had passed up a good number of offers from other clubs in Europe because there offers were not ideal for me.

Esse has said that the players need to update a lot of meaningful content in their social media accounts frequently which includes twitter, Instagram, Facebook and other platforms.

At Besiktas, Akida said she has already won the confidence of her coaches and she is looking forward to great moments.

Esse is amoung the Kenyan top footballers who play in Europe. The list also consist of duo Ruth Ingotsi and Annette Kundu who signed a three-year deal with Cyprus outfit Lakatamia FC and Vivian Corazon who plays at Portuguese side Atletico Quriense.
