Akwana given green light to apply for Leopards coaching job

The vacant AFC Leopards head coach post has thus far attracted 16 applicants among them ten foreigners from Africa and Europe after the struggling Kenyan Premier League giants advertised for the position.

Club Secretary General Oscar Igaida further denied reports Ugandan and former Sofapaka FC coach, Sam Timbe, had been sounded out to take over from Belgian Ivan Jacky Minnaert who was fired from the Den after a miserable run of results.

Igaida confirmed applications would close on Wednesday with the door open for interim boss, Ezekiel Akwana, to toss his hat on the ring since ‘he is qualified’ with the successful candidate being appointed from a short-list provided by an Independent Selection Panel set up for the purpose.

“We are going to choose a panel of about five to seven people towards the end of this month so that they shortlist around five candidates whom the national Executive Committee will now appoint one,” the official explained.

“The applications that are coming in through email will be forwarded to the selection panel since we don’t even want to interfere with this process. We have not even opened some papers,” he added.

The new Leopards tactician will be hired under a performance contract as the club seeks to avoid incurring huge financial losses should the coach not deliver much needed success.

Minnaert is suing the club demanding millions in compensation after he was fired seven months into a three-year contract signed in February.

Leopards are languishing 12th in the KPL log with five games having been knocked out of the Top 8 and GOtv Shield cups despite investing heavily in recruiting players and bringing in the Belgian.

The club is yet to win under the interim management led by Akwana and suffered a 2-1 reverse at Bandari in their last KPL outing before the international break.
