Al Ahly knock Pipeline out to end Kenyas CAVB hope

Six-time African Women’s Volleyball champions Kenya Pipeline will for the second year in a row fight for the bronze medal at the continental scene after falling to defending champions Al Ahly in quarter finals on Saturday evening.

The Oilers went down by 3-1 sets of 13-25,18-25,25-23 and 25-20 to crash out of the title race with the performance capping yet another poor outing in the championship.

The introduction of rookie setter Esther Mutinda in the third set won Kenya Pipeline one set but it was not good enough to break the North African dominance in the annual competition.

Record holders Ahly will face 2018 champions Carthage of Tunisia in an all North African final on Monday while Magret Indakhala’s Pipeline will be out to defend their 2018 third position against GSP of Algeria.

GSP surrendered a one set lead to succumb to former Champions Carthage by 3-1 sets of 25-23,24-26,16-25 and 24-26 in the second semi final match played on Saturday evening.

On other hand, KCB won against USFA of Burundi by straight sets of 25-10,25-15 and 25-8 in the classification match of position 9-12.

The bankers will now take on Rwanda’s Revenue Authority, who beat Canon of Congo in the battle for the chance to finish in either ninth or 10th position in the competition.

Other Kenyan representative,Kenya Prisons, returned home prematurely after being ordered back on Thursday night by the State Department of Correctional facilities.

The five-time African champions finished third in Pool D after an underwhelming campaign and are facing fines by CAVB, the continental governing body after forfeiting their playoff matches as a result.
