All Blacks legend Jonah Lomu remembered at memorial service

Mourners in the south Auckland suburb of Mangere took part in a community memorial service for Jonah Lomu, the former All Blacks winger, on Sunday (November 22).

Among those at the service were Lomu’s mother Hepi and childhood friends, who gathered at the Lotofale’ia Tongan Methodist church which Lomu had attended as a child.

Jonah Lomu, who was aged 40, died suddenly on November 18.

He won 63 caps and scored 37 for the All Blacks. He suffered health problems before and after his playing career ended in 2007, and had had a kidney transplant.

Among the mourners were government officials including New Zealand’s Minister for Pacific People.

Lomu’s family also plan a private and public memorial service later.
