All set for AKs 70th anniversary celebrations

It’s all systems go for the Athletics Kenya (AK) 70th anniversary celebrations set to be held on Tuesday at the Nyayo National Stadium.

The federation will use the event to honour Kenya’s pioneer athletes as it marks 70 years since its inception in 1950.

AK president Jackson Tuwei has said that some 60 veteran athletes have already been confirmed for the event that will be graced by Ministry of Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed as the chief guest.

Tuwei explained that alongside the veteran athletes, they have also invited outstanding athletes over the recent years including five-time World Cross Country champions John Ngugi and Paul Tergat and the two-time world marathon champion Catherine Ndereba as well as the reigning world marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge.

“We invited about 100 athletes, the majority who are our pioneer athletes who started this journey and although may not be with us, we will have their kin to represent them. As at now we have confirmed the attendance of 60 athletes who have already arrived,” said Tuwei while briefing the press on preparations of the event.

The federation will also rebrand with the launch of a new name and logo. It will be the second time since its inception that the federation will be having its name changed, the first being when it morphed the Kenya Amateur Athletics Association (KAAA) in 2002.

Due to Covid-19, Tuwei said a limited crowd will be allowed at the stadium while urging athletics fanatics to follow the proceeding live on their television sets.

According to the chairman of the event’s Local Organising Committee (LOC) David Miano, all the 12 regions and four institutions affiliated to the federation have also been invited and will showcase their diverse cultures and success in athletics.

Similarly, athletics equipment – both the old and current – will be displayed at the event which will culminate in cake-cutting to mark the celebrations.
