All systems go as 300 golfers set to battle it out in Ruiru

At least 300 golfers drawn from clubs across the country are expected to grace the par 72 Ruiru Sports Club in what is expected to a thrilling contest this weekend.

Multi-Choice Kenya has come in as the title sponsor for the event, bringing in over a dozen top prizes which will be up for grabs.

Speaking during the media announcement on the sponsorship, MultiChoice Kenya General Manager Simon Kariithi said: “We are excited to be the title sponsors of this tournament, sports is an integral part of our society and we are delighted to support this event.”

Other sponsors include Occidental Insurance,public relations firm  Oxygene Marketing and Communications, paint manufacture Crown Paints, milk producer Fresha, design and printing outfit Magfre and TEK  Productions- a video and photography house among others. The event is in honour of golfer Peter Mwaura, to mark the end of one year at the helm of the fast growing club.

Among the tens of prizes set aside for the day, golfers will be fighting out for a fully paid trip for two to Mauritius for a hole in one at the famous Hole 3, special prizes for media personalities, juniors, Pros, detour members, the clergy, guests from neighbouring and reciprocating clubs, former golf captains and sponsors during the 12 hours’ golf action.

Mwaura in an interview said its all systems go for the weekend showdown.

“The course is in good shape and the greens are freshly cut for an amazing experience. We are looking forward to hosting arguably one of the biggest golf tourneys in the country,” said Mwaura. “We will be celebrating what has been quite a successful year for the club.”

Last weekend, the club launched a course irrigation project which is expected to be finalized within 8 months, drastically transforming the 18-hole course in readiness for hosting major local and international tournaments.

Home golfers to watch out include recent winners Ezekiel Mucina, Henry Mwaura, Samuel Njinu, Teresia Wainaina and Judy Nyambura. A number of local pros are expected to participate at the event as well as top ranked amateurs and some of the country’s top juniors.

Some of the media personalities expected to tee off on Saturday morning include Nation Media Group’s Henry Owour and Mac Otani, Star’s Samson Ateka and the seasoned Media Max’s star Tony Kwalanda and Tony Timase, Emoo FM’s Kiplagat Kwambai among others.

The tournament will be played in a stable ford format with the first flight set for 6:45 am while the last tee off will be 1:30 PM.
