Argentina ready for Jamaica meet in Copa America

Argentina and head coach Gerardo Martino made final preparations Friday for their last Copa America group stage game, a matchup Saturday with Jamaica that will help determine the winner of Group B.

Argentina, the third ranked team in the world and highest at the Copa America, has four points after an opening match 2-2 draw with Paraguay and 1-0 victory over defending Copa champions Uruguay.

In speaking to the media, Martino made sure not to get ahead of himself.

“We haven’t qualified. When we trained this morning we didn’t know if Mexico was going to lose to Ecuador or tie. And so independent of how tomorrow’s game is analysed, among the media that is, the reality is that looking at the numbers we aren’t even there yet. And we’re not just trying to qualify, but trying to be on top,” he said.

Jamaica, who is ranked 65th in the world by FIFA, enters the match with no points after 1-0 losses to Paraguay and Uruguay.

Speaking to the media, Jamaican coach Winfried Schafer was pleased with the effort put forth by his squad in the Uruguay match,

“I am happy about all players. Everybody played very well for this beautiful country (against Uruguay).”

Argentina has not won the Copa since 1993 when they defeated Mexico.
