Argentinian test awaits Kenya in Challenge trophy

Kenya dropped to the challenge trophy for the umpteenth time this season as they won one game, lost one and drew their last at the Paris Sevens in France.

The Shujaa will face Argentina in the Challenge Trophy quarters on Sunday at 10:22am Kenyan time.

Kenya had an arduous task in their final group game against England after losing to France in their opening game by 20 – 14 but bounced back against Spain in their second group game to win 26 – 14.

Against the English, the white shirts dominated possession for about a minute but it failed to amount to points as Kenya’s defense stood firm.

Billy Odhiambo fended off an advancing Dan Norton but he dropped the ball at the worst time possible and Kenya’s best chance went begging.

England struck first soon after with Ruaridh McConnochie scoring the first try..Captain Tom Mitchell missed the conversion.

Some scrappy play by Kenya culminated in a try with Frank Wanyama diving over the white wash to draw the two sides level 5 – 5.

A case of poor handling scuttled Kenya’s chances of setting up an attacking platform once again with Billy Odhiambo the transgressor. England broke the deadlock with Dan Bibby scoring their second try after some fancy footwork by Charlie Hayter.

He converted his own try for a 12 – 5 lead. England almost scored their third try soon after but some ferocious tackling by Shujaa culminated in a turnover with Dennis Ombachi drawing the two sides level for the second time as Oliech converted for a 12 – 12 deadlock.

Kenya had the chance to snatch victory from the jaws of a draw but some poor decision-making compounded their chances of a much needed win.

Kenya’s hopes of ending their six-year losing streak against the English failed to materialize whilst a cup quarterfinal proved elusive once again for Innocent Simiyu’s charges
