Arsenal fan Piers Morgan wanted Mourinho at Emirates

Outspoken celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan admits he would have loved Jose Mourinho at The Emirates, and believes the Gunners are three to four players short of winning the title.

“I don’t know enough about him, from what I’ve read, from the clips I’ve seen, he looks like a pretty useful player. He made the top team from the German combined team from the league last year, so he must be good, but I’ve not seen enough of him to really know,” Morgan said of the latest Gunners signing, Garnit Xhaka.

“It’s a classic Wenger buy of the last ten years. I think we have enough money now to spend really big in the market, we need a world class striker, a couple of world class centre backs at least to compete, and if we don’t get them it’s going to be third or fourth again,” the Mail Online writer and television host added.

Morgan expects the team to struggle next season with rivals Manchester United snapping up Jose Mourinho, Manchester City waiting to welcome Pep Guardiola and Chelsea have already secured Antonio Conte.

“Yes, because look what’s going to happen at the two Manchester clubs, Chelsea, Liverpool, there’s going to be massive spending this summer, and Wenger can’t just get away with being cheap like he normally is. He’s got to go in big and probably find three or four world class players. We’ve got the money so the excuses have to stop.

“Mourinho is going to be brilliant, I would have taken Mourinho tomorrow. He’s won six league titles in three countries since Wenger last won one. The stats don’t lie.”

Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler expects manager Jurgen Klopp to have a successful second season at Anfield, adding that he can also see Mourinho enjoying a successful time at Manchester United.

“I think he’s an excellent manager, will he make them better? He probably will do, I think he’s good for the league, I like him, I always have done to be fair, I don’t wish him too much success obviously, and yeah I think he’s a very good manager.

“I think it’s a good summer for him. I think he’s maybe a bit disappointed with not qualifying for a Champions League, that might alter the types of players he can attract to the club, but I think he’s a fantastic manager, as I said it’s a big window for him. So hopefully he’ll get the player in, he certainly has improved Liverpool, a little bit inconsistent at times, but I think he’ll get it right because he is a good manager.”

Meanwhile former England manager and player Glen Hoddle hopes England fans don’t get carried away by England’s 3-2 friendly win against Germany, but feels it will be an open European Championship this summer.

“I don’t think we’re [England] favourites, let’s not get carried away on the back of the Germany result, but I think it’s a very open tournament I’ve got to say I don’t see it and out and out real favourite, you’ve always got to back Germany and think they’ll be there or thereabouts, but I think there’s going to be six or seven teams who can actually go on and win it if they play well and get a bit of luck.

“We’ll wait and see if you want to get back as a force in Europe he’s done it in Europe before, so he’s probably the right man, he’s got the right credentials so we’ll wait and see, but it’s certainly going to be a fascinating season next year, there’s probably six teams who can go and win the league, so all good for the game.”
