August best Muguna electrified by monthly gong

Western Stima coach, Henry Omino on Tuesday labelled youngster, Kenneth Mugambi Muguna, as a ‘complete player’ saying he has brought a lot to the team despite playing his first season in the top-flight.

Murunga was named the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) Player of the Month for August having garnered 21 points to narrowly edge free scoring Tusker FC forward, Allan Wanga (19) while Kakamega Homeboyz  duo of Sunday Mutuku and Andrew Murunga rounded the top four in the polling.

“I’m happy that our faith in signing him paid off. He’s been phenomenal and it’s evident in the assists, goals and general contribution for the team,” the veteran coach whose side has broken into the top four, eight adrift of leaders Tusker FC with six games to go to the end of the campaign said.

The former Palos midfielder was in electric form for Stima, scoring against Ushuru and neighbours Muhoroni Youth in addition to an all round commanding display in the other matches.

Mutunga landed a call-up for Harambee Stars but is yet to be capped and speaking after receiving the award in Kisumu on Tuesday, he hoped the recognition would see him break into Stanley Okumbi’s national team squad.

“This award is every player’s dream and I’m happy to finally get it. I’m so happy and probably thank the club and teammates for enabling me win it. I hope it steers me towards the top,” Muguna told reporters in Kisumu when receiving the gong that comes along with Ksh100,000 and a 42-inch smart television.

“It’s every players dream to play for their nation and if one gets a chance, it should be utilised to the maximum. I pray this will be the first of many such rewards,” he added.

He becomes just the second Stima player to bag the award since its inception last year following his teammate Gabriel Andika who remains the only custodian thus far to be recognised with the monthly gong.

Muguna became the seventh recipient of the award this year behind Timothy Otieno of Posta Rangers, Mohamed Sharif of Bandari FC, Wycliffe Ochomo of Muhoroni, Khalid Aucho formerly of Gor Mahia and Hillary Echesa of Chemelil Sugar.

“Everyone in the house will enjoy watching the television and I feel encouraged to win bigger things. It has not been easy over the days but I thank God for the blessing,” the player who had just bought his mother a 32-inch smart television said of his windfall.

Fourth placed Stima win face military side Ulinzi Stars in the GOtv Shield this weekend.
