Axed Muhoroni, Sofapaka busiest in KPL transfer window

Muhoroni Youth and Sofapaka FC were among the busiest teams in the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) January transfer window before their stay in the top-flight was cut short on Thursday.

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Appeals Board dismissed the appeals lodged by the two clubs seeking to avoid relegation due to their failure to conform to the FIFA/CAF Club Licensing Rules.

According to a list of sanctioned KPL transfers from the FKF, Muhoroni completed the most deals than any other club with 20 players joining their team with Sofapaka signing 15 during the window.

Former KPL champions Mathare United were second on the list with 17 with league winners Tusker bolstering their side with nine.

Kenya’s representatives in the 2017 CAF Confederations Cup Ulinzi Stars added only two where they promoted Alex Masinde from their Under-20 side and took Baron Oketch on a season-long loan from Gor Mahia.

Newcomers Zoo Kericho FC added only three to the team that finished third in the National Super League to earn elevation to the expanded 18-league competition namely; Andrew Ongwae, Kelvin Oduor and Charles Osomo.

According to FKF 200 players switched clubs but the net financial value of the transfers was not disclosed by the federation.

“We had complications of double registration. Some of them have non-disclosure clauses so the figure cannot be put into public domain,” FKF communications Director Barry Otieno told Citizen Digital.

FKF is mandated to oversee all transfers, keeping audit of the signed contracts and the transfer fee involved.

KCB and Vihiga United, promoted on Thursday evening had not confirmed all their acquisitions with the federation at the time of going to press.
