Ayimba calls for focus after Blad defeat

Kenya Harlequins assistant coach Benjamin Ayimba believes his team deserved to lose against varsity side Blak Blad in their Kenya Cup clash weekend as they never rose to the occasion.

Losing 16-15 at the Kenyatta University ground, the former Shujaa tactician said his charges never exhibited the tenacity and fighting spirit required to win a match of such magnitude.

“We didn’t play as expected and our opponents were angrier scoring with every opportunity they had, so it is Harlequins who never came to the party and they deserved to lose since they had no intentions of winning the game,” he reminisced.

Ayimba however believes  that such losses grants them the opportunity to rectify their weak points.

“Whenever you’re chasing for a championship which is a marathon, hick-ups like those help you sort out problems that you have,” he said. “So for us it’s a match we shouldn’t have conceded but it is one to build on so that we come out stronger in our next match.”

Though they fell to a shock defeat,  Ayimba maintains  there is no need for any tactical change in their next match, rallying his charges to  play their hearts out.

“Blak Blad are in the Kenya Cup and they also want to win, so when they play well they deserve to win. Quins are not invincible and our opponents came out stronger and played well than us and that’s sports; sometime you win or lose.”

Quins face another varsity side Strathmore Leos this weekend at the RFUEA ground and Ayimba has rallied his boys to be more focused on the pitch.

“We need to change our attitude and that isn’t difficult to deal with, so ours is to come to the pitch more focused in our next assignment against Leos.

Quins are placed fourth on the 12-team table on 32 points after 10 rounds.
