BAK postpones long-awaited elections to June 28

Boxing Association of Kenya (BAK) has agreed to postpone its long-awaited elections from May 28 to June 28.

BAK interim Ssecretary General Isaac Mbote said the decision was arrived at following a letter from Registrar of Sports Rose Wasike asking them to postpone the elections in order to comply with laid down rules and regulations.

“We have heeded the advice of Sports Registrar and resolved to extend our notice by a month in order comply with the Sports Act 2013, the Sports Registrar’s Rules and Regulations and the Kenya Constitution 2010. The venue remains Kasarani,” Mbote said.

BAK Council members met in Nairobi in April and resolved to hold the long overdue election on May 28 but this has since changed following a letter the Registrar wrote to BAK on May 27, 2019.

The four paragraph letter addressed to BAK Secretary General Isaac Mbote read in part: “It’s my advice that a fresh notice of 28 days is issued to your members and my office as required under paragraph 20 (2) (d) of the Sports Registrar Rules and Regulations of 2nd September 2016. I therefore propose that you reschedule the elections date from May 28, 2009 to 28th June 2019 from 10:00am. Please note that this is enough time for those vying for various positions and interim officials who have submitted registration applications for the country associations to get all clearance certificates as stipulated under paragraphs 20 (2) (f) and 4 (3) (h) of the of the Sports Registrar Rules and Regulations respectively. Finally, it’s my request that as you prepare for the election, you ensure adherence to Article 81 of the Kenya Constitutions 2010 as required under Paragraph (d) of the second schedule and to the Sports Act and Paragraph 20 of the Sports Registrar’s Rules and Regulations”.

All has not been well with BAK after its mandate ended in May 2017. Prolonged squabbling has since culminated into two warring factions one led by Interim Chairman John Kameta and the other with Interim Secretary Mbote.

Mbote’s camp supports chairmanship aspirant Anthony Ombok Otieno aka Jamal. Kameta’s camp doesn’t recognize Mbote and are instead working with Lt. Col. Paul Mung’ori of Kenya Defense Forces team as its secretary.

In the Registrar’s records, Mbote is the Interim Secretary General, George “Foremen”  Onyango Interim Treasurer and Kameta Interim Chairman.

Meanwhile, preparations for the second leg of the National League scheduled for Busia County on 13th-15th June are on course. All league teams are in serious preparations to fight for supremacy in this year’s league. Among the teams are perennial league champions Kenya Police , hosts Busia Country, Mombasa, Kisumu and Nairobi among others.
