Bandari finally end Gor’s unbeaten run

Bandari FC finally did what all other 16 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) clubs had failed to do; defeat Gor Mahia FC.

Bandari won 2-1 at the Mbaraki Stadium in Mombasa, dashing Gor’s hopes of a second invincible season in four years.

The hosts raced to a 2-0 first half lead thanks to goals from Dan Guya and Yema Mwana before Jacques Tuyisenge pulled one back for Gor in the 78th minute.

Fred Nkata was shown the marching orders for a second bookable offence with nine minutes left on the clock but Gor were unable to utilize their numerical advantage as Bandari held to bag all three points.

Gor had come into the match on the back of a 28-match unbeaten streak stretching into last season and looking to extend their 13-point lead at the summit of the KPL table but were quickly stunned.

Guya headed Bandari into the lead in the 12th minute, rising highest to power home Joshua Oyoo’s delivery from the corner before Yema Mwana doubled the advantage after a smooth move featuring Felly Mulamba and Wycliffe Ochomo.

Gor pressed higher in the second half and finally breached the home defence as Tuyisenge fired to half his side’s deficit. Nkata’s red card only boosted Gor’s confidence that they could still pick a point but Bandari sat tight to see out the win.

Bandari goalkeeper Farouk Shikalo enjoyed a sensational afternoon, making a string of fine saves including a spectacular stop to deny Francis Mustapha although their win was marred by Guya’s injury with the player rushed to hospital.
